1. Selenium and animal health
Selenium is one of the essential micronutrients for human and animals to maintain life activities. When the selenium content in animals is too low, the mechanism will show a series of selenium deficiency diseases characterized by poor growth and development, liver necrosis, white muscle disease, low immune function and so on. A certain dose of inorganic selenium such as sodium selenite is often added to animal feed to meet the needs of animals for selenium, but inorganic selenium such as sodium selenite has problems such as low utilization rate and environmental pollution.
2. Introduction of yeast selenium as organic selenium
Yeast selenium is a yeast source feed additive with high organic selenium content, which is obtained by using the enrichment ability of yeast to trace element selenium, using specially screened Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains and liquid submerged fermentation. It is mainly composed of selenomethionine and selenocysteine. Compared with inorganic sodium selenite, yeast selenium belongs to organic selenium, with higher bioavailability, safety and pollution-free, and has the dual role of organic selenium source and microecological agents. It can be widely used in feed and breeding enterprises, and has the effects of improving reproductive performance, enhancing immunity, reducing somatic cell counts, anti-stress, improving meat quality and improving production performance.
The quality standard of yeast selenium is: total selenium content ≥2000ppm, organic selenium content ≥98%. The recommended selenium requirement for cows is 0.3 ppm, with a maximum limit of 0.5 ppm.
3. Main effects of yeast selenium on ruminants
The main effects of yeast selenium on ruminants are mainly reflected in enhancing immunity, improving reproductive performance, strengthening antioxidant capacity, increasing selenium deposition in tissues, and promoting growth and development.
Fig.1 Effect of yeast selenium on the number of somatic cell counts of dairy cows
The above test results showed that when 300g/t yeast selenium (YeaSel 2000ppm, Angel Yeast) was added to the concentrate supplement, the number of somatic cell counts decreased significantly by 58.85% after 80 days, indicating that yeast selenium can effectively prevent mastitis.
Fig2. Effect of yeast selenium on conception rate of dairy cows
The above results showed that adding 0.3 ppm yeast selenium (YeaSel 2000ppm, Angel Yeast) to the diet increased the conception rate of cows during estrus by 8.33% after the 70 days, indicating that yeast selenium can significantly improve reproductive performance.
Fig3. Effects of Selenium yeast on Selenium Content and Antioxidant capacity of lactating dairy cows
The above results showed that compared with the control group, after 70 days, the milk selenium deposition rate of the test group was significantly increased by 123%, while the MAD content was significantly reduced, and the activities of GSH-Px and SOD enzymes were significantly increased, indicating that yeast selenium can promote the antioxidant capacity of animals, improve the selenium deposition level of the body, and can be used to produce selenium rich milk.
4. Mechanism of yeast selenium on ruminants
① Selenium is a component of GSH-Px. Through GSH-Px, selenium uses the reduction of glutathione to reduce hydroperoxide into hydroxy fatty acids, so that fatty acids can be reduced according to the normal β-Metabolism through oxidation pathway, prevent lipid peroxidation produced by free radicals, and improve the antioxidant capacity of the body.
② Selenium can improve cellular and humoral immunity, reduce the incidence rate of mastitis, and reduce somatic cell counts.
③ Selenium can improve sperm motility of male animals, promote normal secretion of hormones of female animals, promote embryonic development and improve reproductive performance.
5. Recommended scheme of yeast selenium in ruminants
The recommended selenium requirement for cows is 0.3 ppm, with a maximum limit of 0.5 ppm.
