In August 2024, Hubei PHAngel Biotechnology Co., Ltd. is making swift progress on its cutting-edge PHA biodegradable materials project at the Hubei Synthetic Biology Industrial Park. Deputy General Manager Heng Liang reported from the construction site that the fermentation, extraction, and drying workshops, along with other supporting facilities, are on track to be completed by September. The first phase of the plant, with an annual production capacity of 10,000 tons, is expected to go online by February next year.
As the world’s second-largest yeast producer, Angel Yeast has teamed up with Beijing PhaBuilder Biotechnology Co., Ltd., a forefront synthetic biology technology enterprise globally, to create Hubei PHAngel Biotechnology Co., Ltd. The joint venture is focused on scaling up the production of PHA biodegradable materials. Located in Xiaoting District, Yichang City, the project covers around 200 acres and marks a major leap forward for Angel Yeast in synthetic biomaterials, with a total investment of 1.05 billion yuan and construction split into two phases.
PHA is a fully bio-based polymer that degrades rapidly in nature and cuts carbon emissions by 1.6 tons per ton of product over its lifecycle, making it a strong contender to replace traditional plastics. While PHA production currently faces challenges like high costs, limited output, and underdeveloped applications, this project leverages advanced bio-fermentation technology and smart manufacturing systems to build an automated, information-integrated, and real-time optimized production line. This setup dramatically boosts production efficiency, slashes costs, and fast-tracks the broad adoption of PHA across multiple industries.
PHAngel Biotechnology’s 30,000-ton PHA project isn’t just the largest of its kind in China; it’s also the third-largest PHA production base in the world. This highlights Angel Yeast’s pivotal role in driving the green circular economy through synthetic biology and contributing to the “dual carbon” goals. The project will capitalize on various carbon sources, such as non-food biomass and organic waste, to develop PHA materials for high-value sectors like healthcare, cosmetics, consumer goods, and bio-fibers, pushing the envelope on green material innovation.
