Replacing Fish Meal with YeaFerm: Enhancing Aquaculture Production and Reducing Consumption

Fish meal has become the most important source of feed protein for aquaculture due to its essential amino acid composition and palatability. In recent years, the shortage of fishmeal resources has posed significant challenges to the global aquaculture industry. In this context, finding suitable new fish meal alternatives has become an urgent task for the feed industry.

Introduction to YeaFerm

YeaFerm is a brewing yeast culture obtained by solid-state fermentation and drying using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as the strain, which has comparable indicators and effects to imported fish meal. It can replace fish meal as a high-quality functional protein raw material in equal proportions. The main components are yeast cells and their nutritional metabolites, which contain various functional substances such as yeast nucleic acid, yeast polysaccharides, and metabolites. In recent years, yeast cultures have been widely used in aquatic animals. Previous studies have shown that yeast culture can improve the growth performance of aquatic animals by enhancing their intestinal digestive enzymeactivity and immunity.

The advantages of fish meal substitute product YeaFerm

No.1 The odor and taste are similar to fish meal

Fish meal substitute products are endowed with a unique fish aroma through special processes, which can make them closer to fish meal. Its taste is also very similar to fish meal, as confirmed by electronic tongue evaluation (Figure 1).

No.2 More balanced nutrition, more efficient absorption

YeaFerm products are closer to fish meal in terms of conventional nutrition, amino acids, minerals, etc., and have richer functional nutrients (Figure 2).

No.3 Rich in various functional substances

The results showed that the acid soluble protein/crude protein of YeaFerm was 1.56 times higher than that of fish meal, and there were unknown nutritional factors, as well as substances such as lactic acid, oligosaccharides, and β - glucan that fish meal did not have (Table 1).

Introduction to Test Cases

Effects of replacement of fish meal with YeaFerm on growth performance, serum biochemistry, body composition, antioxidant capacity and immunity of yellow catfish (pelteobagurs fulvidraco)

The experiment aims to verify the effects of Replacement of fish meal with YeaFerm on growth performance, serum biochemistry, body composition, antioxidant capacity and immunity of yellow catfish (pelteobagurs fulvidraco). 600 yellow catfish with an initial weight of (25.00 ± 0.15) g were randomly divided into 2 groups, each with 3 replicates and 100 fish per replicate. The control group (CK) was fed with basic feed, and yeast culture YeaFerm was added in a 1:1 ratio to replace fish meal as YeaFerm in the basic feed. After 42 days of feeding, samples were collected and analyzed. The results showed that compared with the control group, yeast culture YeaFerm significantly increased the relative attraction rate (P<0.05), increasing by 10.30%. YeaFerm can increase the growth rate and specific growth rate, reduce the feed coefficient, and promote the growth to a certain extent. YeaFerm had no significant effect on the overall body composition (P>0.05). YeaFerm significantly reduced serum aspartate aminotransferase AST (P<0.05), with a decrease of 25.73%. YeaFerm significantly reduced the serum malondialdehyde MDA content (P<0.05) by 71.80%. The activities of lysozyme LZM and alkaline phosphatase AKP in the serum of YeaFerm were significantly increased (P<0.05), with an increase of 61.22% and 65.63%, respectively. In short, it can be concluded that replacement of fish meal with YeaFerm in a 1:1 ratio without negative affecting the growth performance, liver health and body composition of yellow catfish (pelteobagurs fulvidraco). It can also improve the antioxidant capacity and immunity of yellow catfish (pelteobagurs fulvidraco).

YeaFerm can play an important role in fish meal substitution

In summary, YeaFerm, as a new type of fish meal substitute protein raw material produced through a series of innovative processes such as yeast protein fermentation, enzymatic hydrolysis, and seasoning, has broad market prospects. With a deeper understanding of its application value and continuous technological progress, people believe that it is playing an increasingly important role in replacing fish meal, bringing greater opportunities to the feed industry.
