Angel Yeast has begun trial production at its specialty yeast project located in the Baiyang Biotechnology Park in Yichang Municipal High-tech Zone. The facility started feeding materials on August 31 and will reach an annual production capacity of 8,500 tons when fully operational. The launch marks a major milestone for Angel Yeast, completing its full chain layout in specialty yeast—from R&D and pilot-scale production to scaled manufacturing. The project strengthens supply capabilities for high-value yeast-derived ingredients and provides more stable premium raw materials for markets such as craft brewing and bioenergy, supporting key upgrades across the biomanufacturing value chain.

The project focuses on producing specialty yeast that meets significantly higher microbiological standards. Its “specialty” attributes are defined by two core advantages. First, the production process is far more stringent, with microbiological controls at the “ten-thousand-level,” outperforming the million-level standard typically seen in traditional baking yeast and enabling more precise contamination control. Second, its application scope is broader—covering craft beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages, as well as fuel ethanol and biomass energy—offering higher value-added potential. The production lines feature full-process automation from feeding and fermentation to packaging and storage, ultimately supporting the plant’s 8,500-ton annual capacity. The park’s grain storage and auxiliary facilities, carbon-source base, and yeast protein project were commissioned in October last year, February this year, and November respectively.

“The microbiological standard for specialty yeast is at the ten-thousand level, meaning significantly fewer contaminants. Filtered air enters the pressurized feeding tanks to maintain positive pressure, ensuring that nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and other nutrients remain in a highly sterile storage environment,” explained Qin Benguo, Assistant Director of Specialty Yeast Production at Angel Yeast’s Yichang High-tech subsidiary.

Once all four projects in the Baiyang Biotechnology Park are completed, the site will form a fully integrated biomanufacturing industrial chain, further expanding the region’s biotechnology cluster. The successful trial run of the specialty yeast facility represents a new step forward in delivering more functional and sustainable biomanufacturing solutions, injecting fresh momentum into the global market for bio-based products.
