In the entire breeding process of pigs, the growth and development of weaned piglets is the most important. Weaned piglets grow very fast and have fast metabolism, but the digestive system is not well developed, gastric acid secretion is insufficient, digestive enzyme secretion is insufficient, and activity is low. Therefore, piglets have a weak ability to digest and absorb nutrients and are very resistant to antigenic substances in feed，even cause allergic reactions, in addition, weaned piglets cannot take in breast milk, lose the protection of maternal antibodies, and their resistance to pathogenic microorganisms will be reduced, and diarrhea is very prone to occur. Therefore, the requirements for weaning piglet ration formulation are relatively strict, and the selection of feed ingredients, especially the selection of protein source, is particularly important.
For feed companies, the selection of protein source should be comprehensively considered in terms of protein digestibility, palatability, functionality, and biological safety, and scientifically formulate weaned piglet rations. However, traditional animal-derived protein materials such as spray dried plasma protein（SDPP）and fish meal have good palatability and high digestibility. However, they have problems such as difficult quality control, unstable supply, and potential biosafety.. Especially in the current severe situation of African swine fever（ASF）, animal-derived protein source will increase the risk of infection of piglets; plant-derived protein materials also have problems such as unsatisfactory palatability, low digestibility and containing anti-nutrient ingredients.
As the only microorganism with an annual output of more than one million tons, yeast products have attracted attention in recent years. GroPro is a high-quality yeast hydrolysate product developed by Angel Yeast. It is widely used as a functional protein source in the feed of weaned piglet.
Functions and Characteristics of GroPro
Improve the palatability of feed
GroPro is rich in flavor amino acids, flavor nucleotides, flavor small peptides and other substances, which can increase the feed intake of piglets. Studies have shown that adding 2% GroPro to the diet can significantly increase the average daily feed intake（ADFI) of piglets.
Improve gut health
Weaned piglets have faster gut development, and its own ability to synthesize nucleotides is insufficient. GroPro can supplement the nucleotides needed by the body to a certain extent and promote the development of the intestines; in addition, the mannose oligosaccharides in GroPro can improve the intestines Dao flora structure. Studies have shown that adding GroPro to the piglet's diet can significantly improve its intestinal morphology.
Improve immunity
The active substances contained in GroPro, such as β-glucan and nucleotides, can promote the maturation of immune cells, activate the body's immune response, and improve the disease resistance of piglets，which is very helpful for dealing with diarrhea in weaned piglets.
High digestibility
Since the protein components in GroPro are mainly small molecule peptides and free amino acids, the digestibility of GroPro on piglets is as high as 90%. The nutritional value evaluation test results show that the ileal digestibility of each amino acid of GroPro and plasma protein powder is relatively close.
Application program of GroPro on piglets
Application in Creep feed
SDPP is a commonly used protein source in creep feed, but considering its risk, it is used less and less in pig feed. The functions and characteristics of GroPro are similar to SDPP, which can replace SDPP in creep feed .The latest result show that diet with 3% GroPro can improve the quality of feed，the growth performance show no significant differences to SDPP.
Studies also shows that non SDPP Diet added 1-2% GroPro Swine could increase feed intake and growth performance of piglet，which greatly improves the farm’s breeding efficiency.
Application in Nursery feed
GroPro also shows excellent application effects in nursery feed. Our research shows that diet added 0.3-0.5% GroPro can increase feed intake and growth performance in weaned piglet. In addition, the use of GroPro in nursery feed can also reduce the amount of fish meal used, thereby reducing the excessive dependence of feed companies on feed ingredients such as fish meal.
Compared with traditional animal-derived protein source and plant-derived protein source, GroPro has a good application effect on piglets, and the product can be produced industrially, without biological safety hazards, and the product technology can be continuously upgraded. It has great application potential on piglets.
