Proposal for the Development of Codex Standard for Yeast Officially Approved

On April 22, the 54th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Additives (CCFA) was held in Chengdu, Sichuan. With the efforts of the Chinese delegation and the project team, the proposal for the development of a Codex standard for yeast was reviewed and approved by the session and submitted to the 47th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) for review and adoption. The session agreed to the establishment of an electronic working group, with China serving as the chair and with France and Turkey serving as the vice chairs to lead the drafting of the standard.

The Codex standard for yeast was initiated by Angel Yeast in 2021, with a project team jointly established with China National Research Institute of Food & Fermentation Industries, Lesaffre (China) and AB Mauri (China). After multiple rounds of discussions and extensive consultations with France, Japan, Turkey, the European Union (EU), the Confederation of European Yeast Producers (COFALEC) and other countries/organizations, the proposal was finally completed and submitted. The proposal for the development of the standard was reviewed by the 44th Session of the CAC, the 53th Session and the 54th Session of the CCFA, eventually being approved to go ahead after three years of efforts. During the process, China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment and the CCFA Chinese delegation provided strong support.

The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) is an intergovernmental organization jointly established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to develop international food standards to protect human health and ensure fair practices in the food trade. The CAC has over 180 member countries and 1 member organization (EU), covering 99% of the world’s population. CAC member countries refer to and comply with Codex standards.

The development of a CAC Codex standard for yeast will promote fair trade among countries and regions around the world, reduce technical barriers to international trade, provide effective guarantee and support for the internationalization of China’s yeast industry, and contribute to the economic and social development of countries along the Belt and Road Initiative. China’s yeast industry has a late start. It’s both a challenge and an honor for us to lead the development of a Codex standard for yeast as the chair” said Liu Ming, a member of the Chinese delegation.
